Armed with a collection of vintage (and not-so-vintage) guitars, Shure SM58 and AKG C1000 microphones, a (mostly) untried vocal and a head full of sound, plus affordable home-recording equipment, The Den studio was founded. Recording commenced in late 1990 with a Fostex R8-track and 812 mixer supported by an Atari, with C-Lab Unitor running a Roland R8 drum machine and Casio CZ-5000.

Examples of these recordings can be heard on Retried : New Evidence, re-workings of Defendants compositions, and Jazzier.

The album Acoustic Blues also stems from the early 90's but features performances recorded directly to DAT. C Shanties is an acoustic instrumental album with a mixture of digital recordings from the early days and 2005.
